Chief Accountant

Hammond Clarke is working with a London Local Authority in their search for an experienced Chief Accountant. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring the authority meets statutory reporting requirements, working with auditors and leading on year end.

About the role:

• Take the lead in delivering the year-end closure and audit for 2024/25.
• Oversee the preparation of statutory financial statements in accordance with CIPFA and local authority accounting standards.
• Contribute to the development and finalisation of the 2025/26 budget.
• Provide expert technical accounting support and advice to finance colleagues and senior leaders.
• Champion ongoing improvements in financial reporting, systems, and internal controls.

About you:

• A qualified accountant (CIPFA, ACA, ACCA, or equivalent).
• Experienced within local government finance, ideally operating at Chief Accountant or Deputy level.
• Possesses strong technical accounting expertise and a successful track record of managing external audits.
• Demonstrates excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder engagement skills.
