About us:

At the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, we put communities at the heart of everything we do. Our commitment to safety, resilience, and high-quality public services drives how we manage our operations and protect the people who use them.

Our Corporate Health & Safety Team plays a vital role in ensuring that health and safety standards are not only met but continuously improved across the council’s services. This is your opportunity to help shape and influence health and safety at a strategic level within one of London’s most dynamic boroughs.

About the Role:

As our Corporate Health & Safety Advisor, you’ll be one of the Council’s subject matter experts on health, safety, and welfare matters across multiple directorates.

  • Provide professional, independent health and safety advice to senior leaders, managers, and staff across the council
  • Champion and implement the council’s health and safety strategy, developing tailored initiatives to drive improvement
  • Lead audits, assurance programmes, and risk assessments across services to ensure compliance with statutory legislation and the council’s policies
  • Investigate incidents, identify root causes, and implement measures to prevent recurrence, including advising on regulatory breaches
  • Support major projects, construction works, and procurement with competent health and safety input, ensuring compliance with CDM Regulations 2015 and other relevant legislation
  • Coach and mentor staff at all levels, building health and safety capability across the organisation in a wide range of contexts and Council services
  • Engage with enforcement bodies such as the HSE, providing accurate information and mitigating risks where necessary
  • Drive continuous improvement by interpreting key safety performance data and leading action plans to reduce risk
  • This is a high-profile and influential role, where you’ll support decision-making at senior levels and help embed a strong health and safety culture across the council.

About you:

You’re a confident and credible health & safety professional who can balance technical expertise with practical delivery.

  • NEBOSH Certificate (or equivalent qualification or apprenticeship)
  • Membership of a professional body such as IOSH or IIRSM
  • Substantial experience providing occupational health and safety advice in a large, multi-disciplinary organisation
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety management systems, auditing, risk assessments, and compliance requirements including asbestos, water hygiene, contractor management, and fire safety
  • Experience producing clear, concise reports for all levels of management
  • Ability to communicate complex health and safety information in a practical, understandable way
  • Excellent influencing, coaching, and mentoring skills
  • Just as important are your behaviours. You will demonstrate:
  • A commitment to Putting Communities First
  • Integrity, respect, and collaboration in everything you do
  • A proactive, solutions-focused approach with the confidence to challenge and improve
